Intermediate Mosaic Workshop

An intermediate mosaic workshop on cutting glass for texture

The experience

Texture in Glass Mosaics (Intermediate) Move beyond flat color and learn to make glass look like something you can almost touch. In this workshop, you'll discover how the shape of each cut piece creates the illusion of texture, whether it's the ripple of water, the grain of bark, the softness of feathers, or the roughness of stone. Unlike stained glass, where each piece is cut to match a pattern outline, here you'll cut small, varied pieces that work together to suggest a surface. You'll practice cutting slivers, shards, curves, chips, and tiny triangles, then learn how to direct them, space them, and layer color so the eye reads them as texture. What you'll learn: How to cut glass into a range of small shapes for different textural effects How the direction, size, and spacing of pieces change what a surface "feels" like How to blend glass colors to add depth How to plan a composition around texture instead of outline Prerequisite: A previous mosaic class. You don't need any glass cutting experience, since cutting is taught in this class. You should, however, know how to transfer a pattern onto your base, or at least how to grout, so we can spend the day on design and cutting. How the day works: You'll spend the full class creating your mosaic. Before you leave, we'll set it on thinset so you can take it home and finish it (grouting) on your own time. Please bring your own lunch. What you'll make: A small textured mosaic piece based on a subject of your choice. Included: All glass, tools, and materials.
